Butterfly Valves

Butterfly valves are used to start, stop or regulate the flow of gases or liquids. The valve is named a "butterfly valve" because it looks like a butterfly. The valve may use manual or automatic actuators. Smaller-sized china valves have manual actuators, while the bigger ones use automatic actuators.

 Butterfly Valves are used for :


  • To regulate the flow.

  • To isolate the flow.

  • To prevent backflow.


Butterfly valves are made of 4 main parts : 


  • Body: It's the part that fits between the two pipes

  • Seat: Either bonded to the body or locked down.

  • Disk: It controls the flow of media through the valve.

  • Stem: It connects the disk inside to the handle outside


We can classify butterfly valves according to closure design, piping connection design, seat material, and actuation method. 


  1. According to the disc closure design, two variations exist, namely concentric butterfly valve and eccentric butterfly valve.

  2. According to piping connection design, we have lug type, wafer type, flanged, and butt-welded butterfly valves for high-pressure conditions.

  3. Operational wise butterfly valves can be divided into manual actuation and automatic actuation.

Butterfly valves have high flow capacities. Hence, smaller units can be used in various applications; this reduces the cost, space requirement, and weight of the valves. Butterfly valves have only two wetted parts and a wide range of valve linings, and it helps isolate the valve body from the flowing medium. This avoids the use of expensive body material for the valve. These factors work in favor of the valve applications.

The size of a butterfly valve depends on the opening characteristics of the valve to achieve the desired control. The opening angle characteristics are considered for determining the valve size. You will need to provide the following data to the valve manufacturer for designing the valve: 


  • Flange or pressure rating

  • Composition of the fluid

  • The specific gravity and viscosity of the fluid 

  • Maximum pressure drop required

  • Flow rate

  • Design temperatures

  • Operating temperatures

  • Piping moments

  • Material of valve body, valve plate, seat, and disc

  • Diameter of the valve or that of the connected pipe


Things to consider while buying Butterfly Valves


  1. Nature of Fluid: This is the most important factor in valve selection. It's better to understand what kind of medium will flow between the valves. The corrosive nature must be checked. Mediums with high viscosity are not preferred in butterfly valves.

  2. Materials Used

  3. Considering Pipe Weight: Valves should be able to handle the heavy weight of pipes. Unable to do so could lead to bending and leakage.


These details will enable the manufacturer to size and manufacture the butterfly valve. Based on these details, the valve body material can be determined.
