Working of Resilient Seated Gate Valve!

Working of Resilient Seated Gate Valve

For the linear and the straight mediums, gate valves have been gaining huge attention to open or close the fluid pathway. In fact, the popularity of gate valves leads to many contributions to industrial processes. Such valves are designed and manufactured in different shapes, sizes, and ratings and with many kinds of materials.

When it comes to the valve seat, there are two kinds of gate valves including the resilient seated gate valves with another one made up of metal. Before the manufacturing of resilient seated gate valve, metallic ones were being used widely for different applications.

Metal or Resilient Seated Gate Valve - which to choose?

The most common form of gate valves is metallic seated, which are specifically manufactured for the flow isolation of a length of pipeline or piece of equipment. In order to ensure a watertight seal, this kind of valve uses a ductile iron gate. The regular applications for metal seated gate valves are in the water, wastewater, and sewage and also in heating and marine applications. The primary usage is for isolation purposes which becomes easy with the two-sided brass/bronze seat surfaces on the wedge. The only drawback of this industrial valve is the angular seating that fails to make a tight closure to pebbles or impurities.

Regardless of the way you clean the pipes, it is not easy to clean the impurities. This makes the manufacturers turn to resilient seated valves with a plain valve bottom that makes it possible to freely pass the impurities. One sealing surface is made up of metallic parts while the other sealing surface is made of non-metallic resilient material. Such kind of gate valves are known for their good sealing performance but have poor mechanical properties likewise incapable to bear high temperatures and are easy to wear as well. Whereas, metal seated gate valves are known to bear high temperature and pressure conditions, severe service conditions along with excellent corrosion resistance.

The sealing performance of the gate valves may vary in accordance with the structural changes of the gate valve. There are two kinds of gate valves in this regard, including soft sealing and hard sealing. Plunger, elastic and special structures fall in the category of soft sealing. In the hard sealing type, hollow pipe style, rotating, bulk surfacing and multi-levels are the common types. This reveals the hard structure of the welding material which further decreases the abrasion of the sealing face.

When it comes to the working of the resilient seated gate valves, all the parts associated have a significant role. On rotating the handle wheel in the clockwise direction, the steam gets moved in the downward direction across the fluid flow which further than made the gate to be tightly located between two seats. The valve is closed completely so as to avoid leakage of any fluid.

On rotating the handle wheel in an anticlockwise direction, steam and fluid move upward across the fluid flow. The open position of the valve makes the fluid flow through the gate valve.

Wrap Up

The functionality of the gate valves depends on the dual flow directions which are not subjected to the flow direction of the medium. Therefore, it is preferred to use in pipelines where the flow medium may affect the direction of the flow.
